Muncaster Castle has been the home of the Pennington family for more than 800 years. Its archives record Thomas Skelton, known as Tom the Fool, as a jester in the mid-sixteenth century, and the family preserves his portrait and jester’s clothing. Stories say he sent unwelcome travellers toward dangerous quicksand; whether every prank was as cruel as later tellings suggest is uncertain. His reputation as a trickster helped make him the centre of Muncaster’s ghost lore.
