Barkerville grew after prospector William “Billy” Barker struck gold on Williams Creek in 1862. The find drew thousands of people into British Columbia’s central interior and helped drive a period of intense mining, trade, and migration. A settlement quickly formed around the creek. At its height, the Cariboo region included a substantial Chinese community, and Barkerville’s Chinatown remains an important part of the preserved town’s story.
