Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump in southern Alberta records nearly 6,000 years of Blackfoot knowledge, ceremony, and communal bison hunting. The site’s drive lanes and stone markers show how hunters used their detailed understanding of bison behaviour and the prairie landscape to guide herds toward the cliff. Below it, deep layers of bone and archaeological material preserve evidence of repeated hunts and the communities that processed the animals for food, clothing, tools, and shelter.
