On the shore of American Lake, Thornewood looks as if it belongs to an older English landscape. That impression was intentional. Tacoma financier and Port of Tacoma founder Chester Thorne commissioned the estate for his family, hiring architect Kirtland Cutter and landscape architect John Charles Olmsted. Construction began in 1908 and continued for several years, with a Tudor Gothic house, formal gardens, and extensive grounds taking shape beside the water.
