The pass is the reason Bran Castle stands where it does. For centuries, the route between Transylvania and Wallachia carried merchants through the mountains and exposed the border to military pressure. A fortress built here in the late fourteenth century could watch both movement and trade. Its purpose was practical: to hold a strategic crossing.
