Casa Loma was built for Sir Henry Pellatt, a Toronto financier whose business interests included the Toronto Electric Light Company and hydroelectric power from Niagara Falls. Construction began in 1911 under architect E. J. Lennox, and the house was completed in 1914. Its towers, stables, gardens, and secret passages were intended to create a grand private residence overlooking a rapidly growing city. The project cost a fortune and employed hundreds of workers.
