Squire’s Castle looks like a small fortress placed among the trees of North Chagrin Reservation. Its stone walls and arched openings suggest a medieval stronghold, but the building began as something more practical: a gatehouse for an estate that was never completed. In the 1890s, oil executive Feargus B. Squire acquired land east of Cleveland and planned a country residence there. The gatehouse was built to mark and serve the approach to that larger project.
The intended mansion never rose behind it. Squire’s castle-like entrance remained as the visible fragment of an unrealized estate, and the contrast between its grand form and incomplete purpose became part of its appeal. The building was modeled on German and English baronial architecture, an imported style that made a wooded Ohio property feel deliberately old-world. The name came later, after the structure was left standing without the house it was meant to accompany.
