The castle at Hunedoara grew from a fortified site into a residence in stages. Archaeological and historical work connects the earliest stone stronghold to the fourteenth century. In 1409, King Sigismund of Luxembourg granted the royal estate to Voicu and his family. His son, John of Hunedoara, later took over the old fortress and began a major transformation after 1441.
