Dawson City rose quickly after gold was discovered on Bonanza Creek in August 1896. When news reached the outside world the following year, tens of thousands set out for the Klondike. More than 100,000 began the journey, but only about 30,000 reached Dawson in 1898. The town became a supply centre for miners and, for a brief period, the largest community north of Seattle and west of Winnipeg.
