Dover Castle commands the narrowest part of the English Channel, a position defended in successive eras. The site includes an Iron Age hillfort, a Roman lighthouse, a Saxon church, and the medieval castle begun by Henry II in the 1180s. Later tunnels were cut into the chalk beneath the fortress as military needs changed, carrying the site into the age of artillery, air raids, and Cold War planning.
