Norwich Castle began as a wooden Norman fort soon after the Conquest. The stone keep was commissioned by William II around 1095 and completed in the 1120s under Henry I. It was designed as a royal palace, though no Norman king made it a regular home. Rising above the city on a vast artificial mound, the keep was a lasting statement of Norman authority.
