Gradara Castle stands within a walled hilltop town in the Marche, close to the border with Romagna. The Malatesta family built the medieval fortress over earlier fortifications, and its walls still enclose a compact settlement above the surrounding countryside. A drawbridge leads toward the tower and the rooms once used by successive ruling families, including the Malatesta, Sforza, Borgia, and Della Rovere.
Gradara’s lasting fame comes from the story of Paolo Malatesta and Francesca da Polenta, made immortal in the fifth canto of Dante’s Inferno. The popular version places their love and deaths in the castle: Francesca’s husband Gianciotto discovers the lovers and kills them. The museum and official history sources are careful, however: oral tradition associates the tragedy with Gradara, but no surviving document proves it happened in these rooms. The historical marriage between Francesca and Giovanni Malatesta is documented; the exact setting of the literary episode is not.
