Miramare Castle was built on a rocky promontory outside Trieste between 1856 and 1860 for Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian of Habsburg and his wife, Charlotte of Belgium. Maximilian chose the site for its direct relationship to the Adriatic: the residence faces the water, and the surrounding park was designed as a carefully composed landscape of formal and English-style garden elements. The sea was part of the architecture, visible from rooms arranged around the couple’s life and their interest in travel and natural history.
