Maitland Gaol began receiving prisoners in the late 1840s, and its first permanent buildings were constructed from locally quarried stone. Over time it expanded into a large complex of cell wings, yards, workshops, and guard spaces. The prison housed men and women; women were held there from its early years until 1951, sometimes with their children. Its architecture reflects changing ideas about security and punishment across a century and a half.
