Pentridge Prison was established in Coburg in 1851, north of Melbourne, and operated until 1997. The bluestone complex expanded over time into a series of divisions, workshops, yards, and cells. Much of the stone used in the prison was quarried on site, making the walls both a record of construction and a product of prison labour. Some divisions became associated with especially harsh discipline and overcrowding.
