Westminster Hall Burying Ground

Westminster Burying Ground began as a burial place before Baltimore grew around it. In the early nineteenth century, the city’s streets and buildings gradually enclosed the grounds. A church was later built above part of the cemetery, raising its floor on brick supports and leaving the graves beneath. The unusual arrangement reflects a city adapting an old burial place to a dense urban landscape.
