Mary Virginia “Jennie” Wade was helping care for her sister and newborn nephew when the Battle of Gettysburg reached the town. On July 1, 1863, she went with her mother and brothers from the family home to her sister’s house, less than half a mile away. Wade was a seamstress; the visit was an act of family care during a crisis that had overtaken their community. Two days later, she was killed by a bullet while inside the house.
