The battle began at a crossroads. On July 1, 1863, Confederate and Union forces converged on Gettysburg, a Pennsylvania town whose roads linked farms, markets, and the wider region. Neither army had selected the ground for a decisive encounter. By the end of the first day, Union troops had been pushed south through town and regrouped on the ridges beyond it. The armies stayed, and the crossroads became the site of a three-day struggle.
