The brick wall of the Farnsworth House still carries more than a hundred small pits attributed to gunfire during the Battle of Gettysburg. The house had stood on Baltimore Street for decades before the armies arrived: its first section dates to 1810, with a brick addition built in 1833. In July 1863, a domestic building became part of a battlefield threaded through the town.
