Port Arthur began in 1830 as a timber station on the Tasman Peninsula and grew into one of the British Empire’s most significant penal settlements. Its relative isolation made it a destination for convicts sent for secondary punishment. The settlement included workshops, farms, a hospital, a dockyard, and institutions intended to reform or control those held there. It closed as a prison in 1877, leaving buildings and ruins across a broad landscape.
